Context and benefits
Because of its sparsely wooded areas, Ireland introduced a national tree planting program in 2019, as part of its "Climate Action Plan" with a target of 440 million trees by 2040. This 15.17 hectare agricultural wasteland is located in the Ballinruan lands of south Galway, in the Munster province. Historically used for agricultural activities, this grassland that used to be grazed by livestock and is now being reforested.
As part of the project, 3 main deciduous species are selected: oak, birch, alder and various other shrubs. Planting trees on the spot will help recreate a proper forest ecosystem that will provide habitat for the biodiversity and constitue a refuge for the wild fauna and flora. The 10,000 trees planted will store carbon, participating in the fight against global change.
