Project description
Reforest’Action and its partner Tilhill invite you to finance the afforestation of a dying forest massif !
The project at a glance
- Number of trees to be planted: 10,268
- Plantation area: 7.99 hectares
- Species planted: pedunculate oak, warty birch, wild cherry, hazelnut, mountain ash, hawthorn
- Project type: reforestation of a stand following a pest attack
- Planting season: Spring 2021
Context
The plots are located on a hill, on the northern boundary of the North York Moors National Park, close to the small town of Great Ayton. This is a welknown hill in Yorkshire and the North East of England, offering a landscape popular among local residents and walkers.
In the past, the lack of maintenance of the massif has led to its premature decline. In 2015, work was undertaken to renew the stand and encourage the growth of a native forest in this area. The approach is based on the diversification of the species to be planted. Deciduous trees will be introduced to create an ecosystem favourable to local biodiversity.
The benefits of the project will be multiple. This diversification will help the massif resist climatic and biological hazards. The trees newly planted will store carbon and thus slow down global warming. On a global scale, the implementation of the project will maintain a continuity and help preserve the forest cover in this protected natural area.
