About Reforest'Action
We are convinced that companies are in the best position to act on a large scale in response to the challenges we face. Being a company with a positive impact, an economic model and a societal "raison d'être" such as ours, is an asset in understanding the issues of our corporate contributors and in supporting them towards greater social responsibility. In addition, being an impact company allows us to place innovation at the heart of our activity, which we need more than ever to address such challenges.
About forestry projects
Trees planted in France and abroad offer many benefits, mainly on climate, biodiversity, health and employment. We provide you with 4 indicators whose estimates are calculated using data collected from experts. These data correspond to an average for all planting projects.
- CLIMATE 1 tree = 150 kg of stored CO2
A tree stores about 150 kg of CO2 over 30 years. This data comes from the calculation method defined in the book "Forêt et Carbone" (Forest and Carbon) published in 2015, taking an example of a plantation project in a French forest as a reference and following the most widespread sustainable management method. The obtained result gives a quantity of stored CO2 per hectare. For some simplicity reason, we decided to reduce this figure in order to obtain a result per tree, using the average density of plantation of our projects. However, it is interesting to note that in tropical areas, a tree stores about 300 kg of CO2 over 30 years ("Atlas of the world's forests", Boulier and Simon, 2010). However, we would rather keep the figure of 150 kg of stored CO2 per tree, so that we don’t overestimate our impact on the climate.
- BIODIVERSITY 1 tree = 3 animal shelters
An IRSTEA study published in Biological Conservation found correlations between a tree's species and the number of microhabitats it contains within its bark, branches or cavities. A deciduous tree thus provides an average of 3 animal shelters, and a coniferous tree provides an average of 2.5 animal shelters.
- HEALTH 1 tree = 4 months of oxygen
According to Thomas Similowski, an expert pneumologist at the APHP, an adult person consumes about 700g of O2 per day. However, according to our forestry experts, a tree produces between 20 and 150 kg of O2 per year. In order to cover a person's oxygen needs for one year, an average of 3 trees are therefore needed. We thus obtain the equivalent of one tree planted for 4 months of oxygen.
- EMPLOYMENT 1 tree = 1 hour of work per year
According to an FAO article published in 2009 in the Unasylva magazine - 233 - "Creating forestry jobs to stimulate the economy and build a green future", afforestation and reforestation activities are the best opportunities for job creation. In the case of afforestation or reforestation activities, 5 million hectares of trees planted annually will create 4 to 5 million full-time equivalent jobs (i.e. 35 hours per week). On average, a person will work 1.5 hours on a tree per year, by considering a plot with a density of 1000 trees/ha.
PLEASE NOTE - an internal Reforest'Action team is currently dedicated to studying how to measure the impact of our projects using more precise, recently published and project-specific indicators, based on methodologies proposed by global and recognized institutions.
There is no deforestation in France. However, French forests are suffering from degradation, particularly due to climatic (drought, storms) and natural hazards (insect attacks, disease). This is why Reforest'Action is committed to the restoration of French forests. To learn more about it, click here.
On some of our forestry projects, we finance “assisted natural regeneration” (ANR) work. ANR is a great eco-responsible approach that allows the restoration and strengthening of forest ecosystems, and which may be even more suitable than tree planting in some cases, or at least complementary to it. To learn more about it, click here.
The selection of our projects is made on the basis of detailed specifications and must comply with the essential principles of the Common Base of Multifunctionality developed by Reforest'Action. To learn more about it, click here.
Reforest'Action's project monitoring protocol consists of remote monitoring, in collaboration with our technical partners, as well as field visits of projects. The goal: to ensure the proper management of forestry projects and the optimization of forest growth over the long term. Since 2020, Ecocert Environnement has been attesting to the reality of Reforest'Action's forestry projects. To learn more about it, click here.
Reforest'Action is committed to supporting multi-species planting and natural regeneration projects adapted to the local ecosystem. The planted species are therefore many, and chosen according to the pedoclimatic conditions of the region and the needs of the local communities. Please note that our specifications favor deciduous species when they are adapted to the ecosystem, and do not allow the transformation of predominantly deciduous forests into predominantly coniferous forests. To learn more about it, click here.
Our specifications in temperate and tropical zones commit project leaders to sustainably managing forests and to conserving the forest cover for a minimum period of 30 years. This commitment notably enables us to protect plots of land from excessively short rotations and to avoid clear cutting, a procedure that is excluded from our specifications. Within the framework of a reasoned and sustainable exploitation, the exploited wood can be used as timber or industrial wood, and will therefore allow to keep the carbon stored in the form of wood. Trees that are planted or monitored as part of a regeneration project are maintained over a life span of 50 to 150 years, depending on the tree species.
For all our projects, a yearly fund is dedicated to replenishment, in order to help project leaders who observe high mortality rates on their plantations due to unforeseen climatic hazards after planting to achieve an 80 % recovery rate.
In tropical areas, trees are planted on village communities’ land. In temperate zones, particularly in France, trees are planted in public or private forests. Their owners are therefore plural: private individuals, the State, local authorities, as well as companies.
According to the "Economic Approach to Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services" (CAS, 2009) report, one hectare of forest provides the equivalent of €970 per year in ecosystem services (CO2 storage, water regulation, preservation of water tables, biodiversity) to the community, and around €117 per year to its owner through the sale of wood. In other words, planting trees is 9 times more profitable for society as a whole than for the owner of the land, whether private or public. Because of the many benefits they generate, forests are a common good for humanity, and whatever project you finance with Reforest'Action, you are indeed acting in favor of the community.
Each project is specifically addressed, and Reforest'Action defines the level of funding needed to optimise each project. The distribution below corresponds to the average of all 2019-2020 projects.
- Forestry projects: selection of projects by Reforest'Action, forestry work, monitoring of projects over 5 years and measurement of benefits by Reforest'Action.
- Operating costs: management costs, research and development costs, seeking funding costs.
- Raising awareness on forest issues: creation of educational and multimedia tools, sharing of information on completed projects, organization of participatory plantations.
Our crowdplanting model allows us to act on a large scale through our website. Operational implementation is carried out by forest managers, associations or local NGOs. Proposing to citizens to participate in plantations would involve a special organization that we are unfortunately unable to set up for now. Nevertheless, we are keen to respond to all the requests on this subject. This is why every year in March, which is Forest Month, we organize plantations dedicated to the general public. Don't hesitate to follow us on social networks to be informed!
About my forest planted online
Payment by credit card is a simple and secure way to buy online. We accept VISA, MASTER CARD and AMERICAN EXPRESS cards. We guarantee maximum security thanks to Mollie, which is compliant with PCI-DSS rules. No confidential data is transferred to Reforest’Action.
Reforest'Action is not an association; therefore payments made for tree planting cannot be deducted from taxes.
Your funding helps restore existing forests affected by hazards (disease, fire, etc.) and create new forests. Thus, you allow the planting of trees that will generate many long-term benefits. We also give you the opportunity to support the preservation of existing forests by purchasing carbon credits associated with a certified forest conservation project in a tropical zone: in this way, you will make your contribution to the climate (without forgetting to reduce your own emissions simultaneously!)
You can follow up on the progress of the projects thanks to the Mag, our news blog. Articles with pictures are published many times a year. You can also follow us on Facebook, on Twitter and on Instagram to be kept informed regularly.
It is not possible to name a tree you planted, because we create complete ecosystems that lead to the plantation to a vast number of trees and does not allow us to personify each tree.
About my monthly subscription
If the total number of trees to be planted on a project is reached, the project is then closed on our website. If you had chosen this project to plant trees every month, your trees will then be planted on a new project selected by Reforest'Action. You will be able to modify this project at any time by choosing another one via the "My subscription" section of your dashboard.
Each month, a new invoice will be available in the “My Purchases” section of your dashboard.
If your credit card expires and you wish to continue planting trees each month, you must end your subscription and subscribe to a new one with your new bank details.
About my gifted trees
If you received trees as a gift by e-mail, simply click on "I plant my trees" in the e-mail you received and let yourself be guided. If you received trees as a gift by paper card, please note the planting code written on the card and log on to www.reforestaction.com. Then click on the green "I use my code" tab located at the bottom of the page, and let yourself be guided to choose the project on which you wish to plant your trees.
Get the planting code and log on to www.reforestaction.com. Then click on the green "I use my code" tab located at the bottom of the page, and let yourself be guided to choose the project on which you wish to plant your trees.
In order to allow our crowdplanting system to function properly, we have assigned an expiry date to each planting code. This allows us to ensure that each offered tree will actually be planted in the next planting season. If you (or the beneficiary of your gift) have not been able to plant the trees before the expiry date of the planting code, the trees will still be automatically planted, online and in the field, on a project chosen by Reforest’Action. The trees will then appear on the dashboard of the person who has initially purchased them.
It is normal for the code to be identical for each of the recipients of your gift. Everyone can still use it individually and choose their own planting project. Indeed, each beneficiary must first create a personal account on www.reforestaction.com. The planting code, valid for the given number of trees, is also valid for the chosen number of beneficiaries who have each created their personal account.
I the beneficiary of your gift did not receive his/her e-mail for gifted trees, it might have gotten in its spam folder. If he/she has a GMAIL address his/her e-mail for gifted trees is highly likely to be in his/her e-mail “Promotion” folder. Remember to have a look!
About the carbon calculator
Every day, each of our actions has an impact on the environment: our travels, our food, our electricity consumption... These different activities emit CO2, whose rapid increase in the atmosphere is contributing to current climate change. We must all individually act upstream by reducing our climate footprint in order to contribute to the fight against climate change, which in return has a lasting effect on the health of forests. Reducing our forest footprint is also necessary, notably because global deforestation is partly responsible for global warming. Discover a range of actions that do good for the Planet on our dedicated page!
- If you are a private individual, go to our dedicated carbon calculator.
- If you are a company and you want to estimate your emissions first, go here.
- If you already know the volume of your annual emissions, go here to make your contribution to the climate (ex carbon offsetting) by supporting the preservation of the forest carbon sink (without forgetting to reduce your emissions in parallel!)
Yes, Reforest'Action's climate contribution solution allows you to purchase VCS (Verified Carbon Standard) certified carbon credits from a certified forest preservation project (avoided emissions) in a tropical area. This ensures the seriousness and robustness of the project.
The Reforest’Action CO2 calculator is based on data provided by ADEME. This is not an exhaustive assessment but a diagnostic targeted at the main sources of emissions in your daily life: your transportation, your home and your consumption.
CO2 within the atmosphere is absorbed by trees through photosynthesis, and is then stored as carbon in the branches, leaves, trunks and in the forest soils. In the context of preservation projects of existing forests in tropical areas that generate carbon credits, we will compare 2 scenarios: a scenario in which the forest would be subject to deforestation (and would then release the stored carbon) and a scenario in which concrete actions will be implemented to preserve the forest. The difference between these two scenarios will allow us to identify the quantity of emissions avoided as a result, and therefore the number of corresponding carbon credits (1 carbon credit = 1 ton of CO2 avoided).
