**In the Peruvian provinces of Lamas, El Dorado, and San Martín, Reforest'Action works in partnership with the CIGDES to support local farmers in setting up agroforestry systems on former abandoned grasslands. The second season of this three-year project came to an end in 2023. A year of intense work saw the planting of 600,000 trees of diverse native species for the maximum benefit of producers who are gradually reclaiming their now fertile land, where they are planting fruit and vegetables in agroforestry. However, faced with increasing drought and the threat of devastating ants, our partner had to redouble its efforts to ensure the survival of the trees. In addition to the future harvesting of tree products, alternative economic activities, such as community beekeeping, are being organized on the ground with the aim of increasing the livelihoods of communities.** 

The project supported by Reforest'Action and carried out in the field by the [Innovation and Management Center for Sustainable Development](https://www.cigdes.org/) (CIGDES) is located in three provinces of the San Martín region, at the gateway to the Peruvian Amazon: Lamas, El Dorado, and San Martín. Starting in summer 2021, the project has been running for over two years in an effort to restore vast areas of degraded pasturelands. The objective is to support and accompany landowners in the rehabilitation of their fallow land through the creation of diversified agroforestry systems. Local communities, for whom agriculture is one of the main means of subsistence, have been clearing the Amazon rainforest in recent decades in order to grow food crops and graze livestock. As a result of traditional farming practices, the land has gradually lost its original fertility until it was abandoned by farming and livestock-raising families. These former meadows have been overgrown with spontaneous vegetation and are now covered by several species of invasive ferns, which are particularly prone to fire in the summer. These phenomena prevent the natural regeneration of the forest. The project therefore aims to restore these abandoned lands by planting six to eight tree species (depending on the season) that will both encourage the future regeneration of the native rainforest and create productive, sustainable agroforestry systems for the benefit of local populations.

On the occasion of an audit carried out in August 2023, Juliet, Project Officer in Peru for Reforest'Action, was able to observe the first positive impacts of the project. [Beneficiaries from the Kichwa ethnic group,](https://www.reforestaction.com/en/magazine/northern-peru-agroforestry-revive-pachamama) involved in the first planting season, are now convinced of the need for restoration activities: their plots have been cleared of invasive ferns, the trees planted two years ago have grown well, and the return of biodiversity is already noticeable (birds, bees, insects, and macrofauna). Their enthusiasm has attracted other producers keen to support the regeneration of their land, so our partner no longer needs to promote the project among the communities, which are already motivated by the many economic and environmental benefits enjoyed by their neighbors.

## The second restoration season: involving local producer families in forestry activities

### Work carried out together with communities

During the 2022-2023 project season, 600,000 trees were planted - including Brazilian rubber, breadnut and mocambo tree, and even sweet pea - on over 300 hectares of degraded areas. Beneficiaries, representing 144 farming families newly enrolled in the project, were involved in the forestry work and took part in at least one of 36 training sessions covering planting techniques, plot maintenance, pest management, and more. 

Beyond planting, the ecological restoration process involves a range of varied, complex, and physical silvicultural tasks. The first step, among the most important, is to prepare the soil to receive the trees. This means removing all invasive ferns to minimize the impact of the ecological barrier they represent and to guarantee the growth and productivity of the future forest. This work is carried out by each producer on his own plots, assisted by two members of the CIGDES technical team. In the San Martín region, traditional farming organization is reflected in a variety of ways, most notably through the existence of mutual assistance days, known as "choba-choba" in the Kichwa language, and organized by the communal committee. These moments of solidarity are mainly intended to strengthen the harmony between people and natural cycles. The whole family takes part in these events, with everyone contributing according to their abilities and skills. Last season's "choba-choba" enabled landowners to benefit from collective help in completing the preparation of their land. A few days after the weeding was completed, a particular tree species, whose primary function is to prepare the soil, was planted: the pigeon pea, or Cajanus Cajan, of the fabaceae family. The aim of planting this species first is to provide shade on the plot, limit the growth of ferns and other weeds, and enrich the soil with plant biomass to create a microclimate conducive to the growth of young seedlings.

The second step is to install the multi-stage agroforestry system on the producers' plots. The task involves marking out the spatial distribution of plant units to know where to plant fruit and leguminous trees, with a view to creating the pre-established design. This activity is carried out by the CIGDES installation team with the participation of the families, who are at the same time trained in the technical operations of the conception process: taking measurements, using a contour line, aligning, orienting, picketing, and so on. Once the land is ready, the seedlings are transported from the nearest nursery to the area to be reforested, and planting work can begin. A notable improvement in the organization of this second season is the installation of 57 "flying nurseries" on beneficiaries' land, using locally sourced materials. The decentralization of seedling production means that seedlings can be delivered on time with fewer physical constraints. The location of the "flying nurseries" has been decided by the community, which takes responsibility for their maintenance and also acquires precious knowledge about the production of native Amazonian tree species.

Finally, the maintenance of the planted trees is an ongoing task that begins on the last day of planting. The CIGDES has a team of professionals dedicated to monitoring the survival of the planted trees and the success of the restoration process. Their mission is to support producers in their monitoring tasks and to train them through regular workshops on shade management, green manuring, pruning, fertilization, pest, and disease control, etc. In collaboration with Reforest'Action, the CIGDES also benefits from a digital mapping software system that enables them to monitor and trace the planted trees over time.

### Search for solutions to climatic and biotic hazards

The survival rate of the trees planted during the project's second season is about 92%. However, this high percentage reflects the continuous monitoring work of our partner, who systematically replants specimens that do not survive. While all the plots are currently in good phytosanitary condition, several challenges were experienced this year, making the restoration of the Amazonian rainforest more difficult.

The summer is getting hotter and hotter in the San Martín region, and the drought is a real challenge. Beneficiaries report how difficult it is to keep the trees alive in this context of climate change. Several measures have been put in place to mitigate the scarce rainfall, including the addition of hydrogel to the soil when the trees are planted to ensure better water retention. In addition, the production of extra seedlings in the CIGDES central nursery effectively overcame drought-related mortality. Another hazard, this time a biotic one, is the presence of devastating ants in the restoration area. To counter this scourge, the participation of some beneficiary producers, who applied biological ant repellents, was key. At the same time, the CIGDES and Reforest'Action decided to collaborate with national and international forestry institutions, such as the Spanish [National Institute for Agricultural and Food Research and Technology](https://www.inia.es/en-en/Pages/Home.aspx) (INIA) and the [Center for International Forestry Research](https://www.cifor.org/) (CIFOR). These partnerships will make it possible to gather scientific knowledge and find effective natural solutions to insect damage.

## The socio-economic impact: promoting food security and alternative income generation

### Fruits and vegetables grown in agroforestry

Besides its environmental impact, the project includes a significant social component. Expected socio-economic benefits include improved food security for producer families. The agroforestry systems created as part of the project are made up of various productive species, including fruit trees, beans, and peas. These food products will be harvested by the landowners and used for personal consumption or sold. Another benefit of restoring the land by integrating trees is that it makes the soil cultivable and fertile again. Some farming families have already started growing fruit and vegetables (bananas, beans, manioc, etc.), which are the basis of their diet, in the shade of the trees planted in 2021.

### Creation of alternative value chains

In the long term, some tree products will help to revive a local, sustainable economy. Indeed, the species planted in agroforestry will provide high-value raw materials, such as latex produced from rubber tree bark, Mayan walnut seeds, and majambo pods, which contain white, almond-flavored beans. Another economic activity that our partner is about to initiate is beekeeping. Several tree species can already produce flowers, and the honey produced can easily be sold on local markets. Awareness-raising sessions on the use of natural inputs will be organized among producers to ensure the survival of the bees. While it is still too early to witness the results, the creation of these alternative value chains will have many positive impacts, including local job creation.

### Community capacity building

As the communities are at the very heart of the project's implementation and success, their empowerment represents a major focus. Throughout the year, operational workshops were organized by our partner, not only to train participants but also to gather their expectations and feedback. Since the start of activities, communities have been grouped into 20 community co-management committees in the three provinces where the project is being implemented. This structure ensures the smooth running of operations, as well as the organization of regular assemblies and "choba-choba" days and the monitoring of plantings. This participatory approach also promotes the consolidation and sustainability of ecological restoration.

**The Peruvian Mother Earth is mourning for her fertility​**
------------------------------------------------------------

Located northeast of Peru, in the heart of the Peruvian Amazon, the San Martín department is one of the **twenty-four state divisions.** Covering more than **five million hectares,** its once fertile lands have been converted into crops and pastures, at the cost of the primary forest that used to take root in the area. Plot farming in Peru represents the first cause of deforestation. Agriculture is being practiced both by small family farmers, whose survival depends on their production, and by national and international agribusinesses, exerting pressure on their local counterparts.

In one of the most deforested regions of the country, local farmers have been abandoning their plots of land whose overexploited soil had lost fertility. The abandoned farmlands are now largely covered by an **invasive fern species,** _Pteridium aquilinum._ These degraded areas are also particularly prone to **fires,** which are very common in the Amazon during the summer. Like a vicious circle, these phenomena worsen the degradation of the already weakened soils and decrease water resources.

Between deforestation and natural disasters, the **_Pachamama,_** Mother Earth of the Inca people, has been deprived of its power to provide abundance, yet source of life for indigenous communities. Badly treated for many years, the "Earth-Goddess" urges them to develop new practices so she can regenerate herself.

In response to this call, the Peruvian government establishes in 2015 an **institutional framework** to fight against deforestation, to conserve tropical forest through the creation of natural protected areas and to adapt the country's forests to climate change. The _Serfor - Servicio Nacional Forestal y de Fauna Silvestre_ - was thus created, whose mission is to promote the sustainability and competitiveness of the forestry sector for the benefit of the population and the environment.

Although the situation is improving thanks to these measures, the national strategy is still too fragile given the needs and economic interests at stake. In support of the governmental framework, Reforest'Action's project in the San Martín region is contributing to the restoration of forest ecosystems and the diversification of local stakeholders' income.

**Agroforestry: a dual solution**
---------------------------------

The project developed by Reforest'Action in partnership with the [Centro De Innovación Y Gestión Para El Desarrollo Sostenible (CIGDES)](https://www.cigdes.org/) is being carried out simultaneously in **three provinces:** Lamas, San Martín and El Dorado. Started during the summer 2021, it will last for three years. The work involves installing **agroforestry systems** in abandoned areas, alongside producers and indigenous communities. The development of agroforestry will result in the restoration of former forest plots, including soil conditions, while generating additional **socio-economic benefits.**

Last September, more than a year after the beginning of the tree plantings, an **audit** of the project was conducted in the field by our Project Officer in Peru, Juliet. A total of **600,253 trees** of **six different species** were planted in the first year of the project: productive species (rubber, majambo and Mayan walnut) combined with leguminous trees that produce pea-filled pods. The trees grow slowly due to poor soil quality and long periods of drought. However, the survival rate of the seedlings, equal to **96%,** is excellent and attests to the compatibility of the species with the soil and climate conditions of the region.

In addition to this multi-stage installation, villagers have planted corn, bananas, pineapples and papayas, which will benefit from the presence of the species financed by the project to develop. Thus, the soil is gradually recovering, bringing their **productivity** back to these abandoned areas, and offering the population solid prospects for crops and income.

**Products that are worth gold for the Kichwa people**
------------------------------------------------------

The **Kichwas** - or Quechuas depending on the region - are an **ancestral ethnic group** of the Andes found in Peru, Ecuador and Colombia. The region of San Martín, where the agroforestry plantations are located, is very much influenced by their culture. These people have crossed the centuries despite harsh living conditions, in the heart of a nature as demanding as nourishing. Beyond the language they share, the native Kichwa communities have preserved traditional and unparalleled customs: gastronomy, painting, weaving, dances, or even myths and legends make up a folklore of inestimable value. Direct descendants of the Inca civilization, their society is essentially based on agriculture and livestock. That's why the trees planted in agroforestry within the framework of the project will participate in the **economic development** of these Amazon people.

In Lamas (as well as in the two other provinces), landowners and producers, who have been involved in all stages of the project, come from the **Chunchiwi and Chirikyaku** communities, members of the Kichwa ethnic group. Supported by the CIGDES field team throughout the past year, they have actively participated in the weeding of the land, the installation of nurseries and the planting of trees on their plots. Their involvement is all the more relevant since their **food security** depends on it. Indeed, the species planted will provide raw materials of **great economic value,** in addition to creating jobs on a local scale.

### **Latex or rubber**

Rubber extraction was first developed in the Amazon rainforest by cutting the bark of the rubber tree, also known as the "tree of fortune". Thanks to agroforestry, it will be possible to revive a local and sustainable rubber economy, far from the damage it may have caused in the past.

### **Mayan walnut**

The seeds of the Mayan walnut tree have great potential for commercialization by communities. The nutritional values of its fruits are impressive: their high protein, iron and calcium content makes them a valuable nutritional supplement.

### **Majambo**

Cousin of the traditional cocoa bean, the majambo pod is larger and contains white beans that taste like almonds. Some companies use them to make chocolate, others prefer to turn them into flour.

Our local partner, the CIGDES, will ensure the link between the Kichwa producers and the resale market, in connection with a network of cooperatives and local industries. Therefore, the introduction of agroecosystems will allow the beneficiaries to generate **additional income.**

**Caring for the _Pachamama_**
------------------------------

The term Pachamama means "Mother Earth" in the Andean cosmogony of the ancient Inca Empire. Pacha meaning "earth", and Mama, "mother". Considered as a living goddess embodying the fertile land behind all vital resources, the Kichwas respect and venerate her. The tradition of their ancestors, still honoured today, is to pay tribute to the Pachamama through offerings, by burying foodstuffs in the ground, in the earth. For this altruistic society, which used to live in perfect harmony with its environment, Man and nature must become one.

In this context of respect for the **socio-environmental balance,** **100%\*** of the beneficiaries of the project, when interviewed by our Project Officer, stated that they fully understood its usefulness. Besides, during the last few months, **216 families** have been **trained** in the analysis of the soil, in agroforestry and in the control of the trees' health. Because community self-help is the central pillar of the _Pachamama_ philosophy, **15 rural organizations** have been created, one in each participating village, to ensure the smooth running of the plantations and their **long-term monitoring.**

Northern Peru: agroforestry to revive the Pachamama

In Peru, **more than one million hectares of forest have disappeared in 15 years**. In this country, that contains **13% of the Amazonian Forest,** trees are essential **to the health of unique tropical ecosystems**, to the **survival of a rare and often threatened biodiversity** but also to the **subsistence of millions of Peruvians, farmers and inhabitants of rural areas.** To reduce the impact of deforestation, Reforest'Action is supporting **three projects dedicated to the restoration and protection of forest ecosystems on the field**.

**Tarapoto: Reforest’Action's first tropical project**
------------------------------------------------------

First stop: **Tarapoto**. Being **our first project implemented in a tropical zone**, this **agroforestry** project, located **in the heart of the Peruvian Amazonian Fores**t, holds a very special place to us. **Started in 2015**, it has been monitored and accompanied on site by the **Urku Center**.

Tarapoto is an **urban area of 320,000 inhabitants** situated in the San Martin region. Located at **an altitude of 356 meters**, it is surrounded by low and high forests.

Since trees were planted, **time has passed,** and the reforested plots now **look more like forests than plantations**. _“Fruit, fast-growing and high-growing species have been planted over the years_", explains Annette Butty, in charge of Reforest’Action’s forestry projects in South America. Today, these forests are extremely mixed. Even medicinal plants with multiple virtues grow there, which allow the plots’ owners to generate additional income”.

Two of the project's beneficiaries have decided to go **one step further by creating agro-ecotourism farms around the project**. "_These are green tourism centers in which visitors can discover the variety of species that grow there, the beehives, but also the variety of products from the forest, their transformation and marketing processes_," explains Annette.

Heriberto is one of them and explains the **benefits generated by the project**: "_On the plots, everything is produced in a completely natural and organic way. Most of the species we grow here are ancestral and endemic to the region. Unfortunately, many of them are at risk of extinction. Through the project, we want to make their existence known to as many people as possible thanks to the educational activities organised and the marketing of the products made out of them_”.

We leave Tarapoto, **happy we could witness a concrete example of a socio-economic model built on nature-based soutions**... A model that allows **its beneficiaries to live self-sufficiently**, without depending on the **variable and often low prices of coffee and cocoa that are mainly produced in Peru**.

**Lamas: some encouraging outcomes for a still recent project**
---------------------------------------------------------------

Lamas, a **province of more than 80,000 inhabitants**, located 23 kilometres north of Tarapoto, is **our second stop**.

On the outskirts of this municipality, **in the middle of the Amazonian Forest**, this **vast agroforestry and reforestation project on degraded ecosystems** has been underway since 2021, **in partnership with the Centre for Innovation and Management for Sustainable Development (CIGDES)**.

On the plots concerned, **productive and leguminous species are introduced** to encourage the establishment of **agroecosystems**, **restore degraded agricultural plots or pastures**, but also **help 240 beneficiaries adopt sustainable forestry practices in line with current environmental challenges**.

On the ground, the main nursery was set up in September 2021. During our visit, we take part in the restoration of a demonstration plot by local community members. “_We are only at the very beginning of the project, but we can already see its positive impacts on the population_, observes Annette. _Setting up the nurseries, monitoring and plantings are sources of income for the members of the technical team who carry them out_”.

As for the beneficiaries, the project seems to **nourish their hope of seeing their living conditions improve**: soon, the **latex** produced by the **rubber tree**, the **white cocoa** produced by the **majambo** and the **fruits** derived from the **Mayan walnut tree** will be harvested and marketed, a way **to increase their income on a regular basis**.

**Piura: a project driven by a collective spirit**
--------------------------------------------------

The tour of Peruvian projects ends in a **cold, foggy weather, 2500 meters above sea level**. On that day, we reach the project’s plots, **located around the city of Piura**, capital of the Piura region, north of the country.

**Started in 2019,** in partnership with the **Peruvian NGO Progreso**, the Piura project aims at **restoring degraded soils, introducing agroecosystems and limit desertification in the mountain in order to promote biodiversity.**

In addition to the restoration of private parcels, the project includes **community plots,** where local community members gather to carry out planting actions. This collective movement reminds us of **the importance of the social aspect of reforestation on communal land**:

"_This approach could not be implemented if we did not take an interest in the community as a whole,_" observes Annette. _Here, in 2 years, we have already planted 1 million trees thanks to the community’s collective effort. It is because the projects create links between people of all ages, for the long-term benefit of the greatest number, that it all works_”.

**A meeting between the projects' beneficiaries as a final point to our trip**
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

At the very end of our trip, we participate to **an event organized by Reforest’Action** that spans over the sharing of experience **between our partners and the projects’ beneficiaries**.

On that day, an earthquake that damaged the road network in the north of the country prevented some of the participants to get there. Despite this, **discussions are going well**, raising the necessity to **follow-up and monitor each of the projects** initiated in Peru, as explained by Annette: "_This kind of events gives beneficiaries a voice and allows us to learn from their know-how and experience. It reminds us of the importance of encouraging dialogue between different stakeholders. It allows us to take a long-term view, well beyond the planting phases. Today, time has come for knowledge sharing and inter-community training. We must continue to put all our energy into increasing people's forest knowledge, so that they can make the most of the projects implemented_”.

This conclusion is a reminder of the **importance of collective action** as well as the need to **make local communities agents of forest ecosystem restoration**.

Ce délaissé agricole reboisé se trouve dans la commune de Ballinabarney, au sein d’une zone d’intérêt archéologique. Très appauvrie par le travail agricole, la terre avait une faible valeur environnementale, d’où la nécessité de ce projet. Aujourd’hui, 5 900 arbres d’essences diverses y sont plantés. Cette démarche permettra d’augmenter la résilience de cette forêt en devenir face aux attaques extérieures. Celle-ci pourra également accueillir une biodiversité saine et variée en créant de nouveaux habitats. Ce reboisement sera aussi l’occasion d’augmenter la surface boisée de l’Irlande, actuellement faible : en effet, les forêts ne recouvrent que 7 % du territoire irlandais, ce qui en fait l’un des 5 pays les moins boisés d’Europe. Par ailleurs, les arbres plantés stockeront du carbone, participant ainsi à la lutte contre le réchauffement climatique. Ils assureront également une continuité forestière sur la zone et participeront à la formation d’un patrimoine forestier résilient.

This reforested agricultural wasteland is located in the town of Ballinabarney, within an area of archaeological interest. Highly impoverished by farming, the land had little environmental value, hence the need for this project. Today, 5,900 trees of various species have been planted. This approach will increase the future forest's resilience to external attacks. It will also be able to host a healthy and varied biodiversity by creating new habitats. This reforestation will also be an opportunity to increase Ireland's wooded area, which is currently low: indeed, forests cover only 7% of Ireland's land area, making it one of the 5 least wooded countries in Europe. In addition, the trees planted will store carbon, helping to combat global warming. They will also ensure forest continuity in the area, helping to create a resilient forest heritage.

Reforest’Action is joining forces with C4 EcoSolutions and AfriCarbon, two South African companies into the protected reserves of Kuzuko and Koedoeskloof. The goal is to restore these ecosystems by planting more than 500,000 seeds of Spekboom, a local species which is essential to the ecological functioning of the region. The project will develop a new sustainable grazing management system to improve the carrying capacity of livestock without degrading the environment. Numerous benefits will also be generated: the return of biodiversity, including a population of elephants, rainwater infiltration improvement, restoration of arable land and improve the living conditions of the local populations.

Within the Eastern Cape, in South Africa, land desertification is due to the increasing pressure of livestock on pastureland. Nowadays, the increasing scarcity of vegetation cover and the degradation of local farmers’ land and surrounding reserves are causing many negative environmental effects, such as the drying up of water resources, loss of biodiversity and soil erosion. The plantation areas are made up of former degraded pastures, and are located close to areas that have been protected for several decades.

The project is led in the field by Anthony Mills, a geochemist and expert in environmental development projects. He is the founder of two companies, AfriCarbon in 2009 and C4 EcoSolutions in 2015, which ensure the technical and operational deployment of the project.

Cette parcelle forestière de 7,50 hectares de la forêt domaniale d’Escandorgue dans l’Hérault accueille désormais les 14 100 arbres du projet. Située à proximité du parc naturel régional du Haut-Languedoc, elle se trouve au sein d’une zone naturelle d’intérêt écologique, faunistique et floristique de niveau 2. Malheureusement, la tempête Klaus a frappé la forêt en 2009, ravageant une grande partie de son peuplement qui ne montrait, jusqu’à présent, plus aucun signe de régénération naturelle. Ce reboisement sera l’occasion de diversifier les essences afin de rendre le massif forestier plus résistant. En variant sa composition, le peuplement pourra accueillir une plus grande biodiversité. En outre, la captation de carbone sera un autre atout de ce projet, qui permettra à la forêt de participer à la lutte contre le réchauffement climatique. A terme, les arbres plantés assureront une continuité forestière sur la zone et participeront à la formation d’un patrimoine forestier résilient.

This 7.50-hectare plot of forest in the Escandorgue state forest in the Hérault department is now home to the project's 14,100 trees. Located close to the Haut-Languedoc Regional Nature Park, it is part of a level 2 Natural Area of Ecological, Faunistic and Floristic Interest. Unfortunately, storm Klaus hit the forest in 2009, devastating a large part of the stand, which until now had shown no signs of natural regeneration. This reforestation will provide an opportunity to diversify the tree species to make the forest more resilient. By varying its composition, the stand will be able to accommodate greater biodiversity. Carbon capture will also be another of the project's assets, enabling the forest to contribute to the fight against global warming. Ultimately, the trees planted will ensure forest continuity in the area and contribute to the creation of a resilient forest heritage.

Située en Belgique, cette monoculture, exclusivement composée de douglas, a été fortement fragilisée par ce modèle de gestion monospécifique. Malheureusement, les arbres qui la composent dépérissent, menaçant par conséquent sa pérennité et l'écosystème qui s'y loge. Dans le cadre du projet, 2 650 arbres sont introduits afin de reconstituer le massif. En diversifiant les essences qui la composent, le peuplement sera beaucoup plus résilient face aux aléas extérieurs. Cette démarche favorisera aussi le développement d’une biodiversité riche et variée. Par ailleurs, la restauration de cette forêt permettra de stocker du carbone, participant ainsi à la lutte contre le changement climatique. Finalement, les arbres plantés assureront également une continuité forestière sur la zone et participeront pleinement à la formation d’un patrimoine forestier résilient.

Located in Belgium, this monoculture, composed exclusively of Douglas-fir, has been severely weakened by this monospecific management model. Unfortunately, the trees that make up the forest are dying back, threatening its survival and the ecosystem that supports it. As part of the project, 2,650 trees are being introduced to restore the forest. By diversifying its tree species, the stand will be much more resilient to external hazards. This approach will also encourage the development of a rich and varied biodiversity. Restoring the forest will also store carbon, helping to combat climate change. Ce délaissé agricole se trouve dans la commune de Palatine, en Irlande où les forêts ne recouvrent que 7 % du territoire. La parcelle détient une faible valeur environnementale en raison du travail agricole ayant considérablement appauvri les sols. Aujourd’hui, boiser ce délaissé agricole est une nécessité. Au total, près de 6 500 arbres sont  plantés sur place, ce qui contribue à augmenter la surface du couvert forestier du pays et à améliorer le paysage local. Composé d’essences diversifiées, ce massif résistera mieux à d’éventuelles attaques biologiques ou aléas climatiques. Par ailleurs, la création de cet écosystème forestier favorisera le développement d’une biodiversité riche et variée sur la parcelle. Sur la durée, les arbres plantés stockeront du carbone, participant ainsi à la lutte contre le réchauffement climatique.

Sylva Nova practises non-invasive silviculture, banning both brutal clear-cutting and record-breaking planting, favouring continuous cover and irregular high forest, supporting and enriching natural regeneration, focusing on the diversity of species and their adaptation to the site.

The aim of the project is to afforest an agricultural wasteland in a region of Ireland where forests account for only 7% of the land area. The plot in question - located in the commune of Palatine - is currently of low environmental value, due to the fact that the soil has been considerably depleted by farming. By planting a wide range of species, the forest will be more resistant to biological attack and climatic hazards. It will encourage the development of a rich and varied biodiversity and, in the longer term, contribute to the fight against global warming thanks to the carbon storage provided by the biomass that will have developed there. The almost 6,500 trees to be planted will increase the country's forest cover and enhance the local landscape.

Reforest'Action is partnering with Rioterra, to implement a reforestation project in the State of Rondônia, in the southwest of the Brazilian Amazon. This state is part of the “deforestation arc” formed by vast territories where the agricultural frontier and deforestation have greatly increased in recent decades. The aim of this project is to restaure forest in Rio Preto Jacunda Extractivist reserve by the creation of fruit forests. The project also aims to carry out environmental awareness and education programs among local and traditional populations

RESPONSIBLE_CONSUMPTION_AND_PRODUCTION

The Amazon rainforest, one of the world's three largest primary rainforests, is also one of the hardest hit by deforestation, with 400 million trees disappearing every year. The main cause is industrial agriculture, which accounts for two-thirds of deforestation in South America. Brazil, the world's largest soya producer, has converted 18% of its forest ecosystems since 1970 to cattle breeding and soya crops, through clear-cutting and burning. Our reforestation project, driven on the ground by our partner Rioterra, is located in the State of Rondônia, in the southwest of the Brazilian Amazon, which is part of the “deforestation arc” formed by vast territories where the agricultural frontier and deforestation have greatly increased in recent decades.

The Center for Cultural and Environmental Studies of the Amazon Region Rioterra is an NGO founded in 1999, whose aim is to propose a development model for the Amazon region which combines conservation, sustainability and improved quality of life for local populations. Their mission: to defend the identity of the Amazon rainforest, promote culture and the sustainable use of the environment, and contribute to a fair, democratic and participatory society. Rioterra coordinates the implementation of our project in the field and monitors the planted trees through visits by their experts and drone images. A technical representative from the NGO visits the site once a month for the first six months, and every three months thereafter, to ensure that the trees are growing well, and that the planted forests are sustainable.

Reforest'Action is partnering with Rioterra to implement a reforestation project in the State of Rondônia, the fourth most deforested region in the Amazon. Spread over three years, the project aims to recover the original Amazonian Forest landscape and to promote the preservation of the Amazonian biodiversity, in addition to generating income for the neighboring population that fully participates in the project. Initiated in October 2020, the second part of the project made it possible to restore illegally degraded former pastures within the extractivist (legally protected) reserve of Rio Preto Jacundá. The objective of this second planting season is to reduce deforestation by creating edible forests. 

This reforestation initiative is intended to support the essential efforts to reduce deforestation in Amazonia, to which every state, organization and citizen must contribute, in particular by taking action against imported deforestation.

Le projet est réalisé en partenariat avec le département des Ressources naturelles de Washington et vise à améliorer la santé globale des forêts. Le projet couvre de nombreux comtés à Washington. Les maladies et les attaques de ravageurs sont des problèmes croissants pour la santé des forêts dans le nord-ouest du Pacifique. Bien que les espèces d’arbres soient souvent endémiques, de nombreuses maladies et ravageurs se propagent épidémiquement dans les peuplements qui perdent de leur vigueur en raison des sécheresses estivales prolongées, des feux de forêt ou d’autres facteurs de stress. Dans ces circonstances, les aléas climatiques ou biotiques peuvent avoir un impact significatif sur la structure du peuplement, la croissance des arbres, la diversité des espèces et la qualité du bois. Ce projet vise à assurer la résilience des forêts dans les zones touchées par les maladies et les attaques d’insectes en plantant une variété d’espèces capables de persister dans le temps.

The project is carried out in partnership with the Washington State Department of Natural Resources and aims to improve overall forest health. The project covers numerous counties in Washington. Disease and pest attacks are growing problems for forest health in the Pacific Northwest. Although tree species are often endemic, many diseases and pests spread epidemically in stands that lose vigor due to prolonged summer droughts, wildfires or other stress factors. In these circumstances, climatic or biotic hazards can have a significant impact on stand structure, tree growth, species diversity and wood quality. This project aims to ensure the resilience of forests in areas affected by disease and insect attack by planting a variety of species capable of persisting over time.
