Toute l'actualitéA high-level international event, the Global Forest Summit will be held on March 12. Co-organized by Reforest'Action and the Open Diplomacy Institute, this virtual summit will bring together representatives of international organizations, members of governments, as well as decision-makers from the business world, community leaders and NGOs, to call for joint action in favor of forests and present concrete solutions to accelerate their protection and restoration.
The UN observes that about 170 million hectares of forests could disappear by 2030, while the IPCC estimates that an increase of 10 million km2 in global forest cover by 2050 is necessary to limit CO2 emissions to 1.5°C by the end of the century.
Forests represent a major, nature-based solution to address the two greatest challenges of our time: climate change and the erosion of biodiversity. They are also key to maintaining human and animal health. Preserving existing forests, restoring degraded ones and extending forest cover, go hand in hand and are part of the solutions for a sustainable future.
In the wake of the One Planet Summit and ahead of COP 15 Biodiversity and COP 26 Climate, the Global Forest Summit represents a tremendous opportunity to accelerate the global movement to protect and restore forests as this year marks the start of the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.
Renowned guests for a flagship event:
Jane Goodall, Primatologist and Anthropologist, Virginijus Sinkevičius, European Commissioner for the Environment and Selwin Hart, Assistant Secretary-General for the Climate Change Support Team, Barbara Pompili, Minister for Ecological Transition, but also Lord Zac Goldsmith, Minister for the Pacific and the Environment of the United Kingdom, or Chief Ninawa, Leader of the Huni Kui people, will together discuss solutions for the forests.
Six roundtables will be held, focusing on forests and the essential services they provide in terms of Health, Biodiversity, Climate and Economy.
