**Initiated in 2020, the project financed by Reforest'Action in the regions of Agnéby-Tiassa, Indénié Djuablin and Mé, in eastern Ivory Coast, is led in the field by the company Agro-Map, in cooperation with the Ministry of Water and Forests. The project involves developing agroforestry within cocoa production chains, creating private and community forests, and restoring national classified forests. It provides direct support for reforestation programs launched by the Ivorian government with the aim of restoring 20% of the country's forest cover by 2030. Three years of implementation in the field have already resulted in the planting of over 920,000 trees of 14 different species, with the aim of sustainably regenerating forest ecosystems and contributing to the transformation of the cocoa industry.**

## The impact of forest degradation on the health of the cocoa crop
 
### In Ivory Coast, 92% of primary forests have disappeared in half a century
Since the last century, Ivory Coast has seen an accelerated degradation of its forests. Logging, mining, urbanization and extensive slash-and-burn agriculture have all gained ground on Ivory Coast's natural forests. Since the country's independence in 1961, Ivory Coast has lost 92% of its primary forests, leading to large-scale erosion of plant and animal biodiversity and climate change at regional and global level. Today, forests occupy 9.2% of the national territory, compared with around 45% sixty years ago. With decreasing rainfall and longer periods of drought, local communities' harvests are dwindling, and their food and economic security is compromised. This threatens the country's entire ecological as well as its economic and social balance.

### Deforestation-induced climate change threatens the cocoa industry
The cocoa sector, in particular, has been severely weakened by worsening hydro-climatic conditions. Ivory Coast is currently the world's leading cocoa producer (2.2 million tonnes in 2022), ahead of Ghana (750,000 tonnes) and Ecuador (370,000 tonnes). Cocoa accounts for 40% of its exports, 14% of its GDP and provides income for 20% of its population. But the industry, which today counts one million producers in Ivory Coast, is faced with the question of whether cocoa plantations will even be able to survive by 2050. 
For years, Ivory Coast's cocoa growers have favored the expansion of monoculture cocoa plots to the detriment of forests. Today, although the majority of cocoa crops are the result of deforestation, i.e. plots have been established in the place of forests, they need forest cover to achieve the best possible compromise between crop yield and longevity, thanks in particular to the shade and moisture that the trees provide for the cocoa trees beneath. But there's another threat to cocoa farming: the structural decline in cocoa yields caused by soil impoverishment in monoculture plots, with no regard for good farming practices. So how can we ensure the long-term future of this industry, which is vital to the country, and move it towards more sustainable production methods with a view to zero deforestation?

### A regenerative project to help safeguard the Ivorian cocoa industry
The project, funded by Reforest'Action since 2020, has the dual aim of contributing to both the regeneration of Ivorian forest cover, and the development of agroforestry within cocoa fields - two essential strands of action to safeguard and enhance the value of the Ivorian cocoa supply chain over the long term. With the support of the Ministry of Water and Forests, the project is being implemented in the field by the Ivorian company Agro-Map, which in September 2023 was awarded the Prix de l'Excellence by the Ivorian government as the best reforestation player in Ivory Coast.

## Breaking the link between deforestation and cocoa production
 
### National target: 6 million hectares of forest restored by 2030
In Ivory Coast, the urgent need is to restore degraded forests and regenerate forests that have disappeared due, in particular, to cocoa production. Since 2018, the Ivorian government has adopted a new forest policy that aims to recover 6 million hectares of forest by 2030, which implies doubling the country's forest cover from 9.2% to around 20%. Our project contributes directly to this ambitious objective, firstly by helping to restore degraded classified forests, and secondly by supporting cocoa producers in the creation of community and private forests. In this way, cocoa farmers play a direct part in reforestation and forest preservation, and help to break the link between their industry and deforestation.

### Restoring degraded islands to ensure the continuity of classified forests
Managed on a long-term basis by the Société de Développement des Forêts (SODEFOR), a state-owned company under the supervision of Ivory Coast's Ministry of Water and Forests, Ivory Coast's classified forests are now protected from logging. However, they still contain pockets of forest that have been severely degraded by past deforestation. 
To help restore them, our partner Agro-Map, in conjunction with the Water and Forestry Department, allocates degraded plots to villagers within these forests. They are then encouraged to grow food crops such as chillies and manioc, provided they also plant forest and fruit trees. Combining these short-cycle food crops with the planting of forest trees keeps villagers interested in the upkeep of these plots, and ensures that the trees grow in optimal conditions. 
Since the project was launched in 2020, 142,876 trees have been planted in the Séguié, Rasso and Béki classified forests. These trees, of various forest species (Framiré, Fraké, Mahogany, Cedrela, Teak...), will help to ensure the ecological continuity of these forests and to reconstitute dense, stable and perennial forest ecosystems.

### Creating new forests to increase forest cover
At the same time, new forests are being planted by local communities. Created on land belonging to producers or community plots, they will be used for food purposes, thanks to fruit trees such as Akpi and Kplé, and will enable communities to market non-timber forest products such as seeds. Some species, such as Fraké and Tiama, will be used for medicinal purposes. In the long term, others will be used to produce timber and firewood, such as Fraké, Framiré, Teak, Niangon and Tiama. Nearly 306,500 trees have been planted since 2020.
Around 20,000 additional trees have been planted on the edges of villages over the past three years, at the request of local authorities and communities, to mark territorial boundaries and contribute to better understanding within communities.

## Towards a transformation of the Ivorian cocoa industry
 
### Agroforestry for more sustainable cocoa production
With a view to contributing to the extension of national forest cover, the cocoa industry itself can participate in the reintroduction of trees on a landscape scale through agroforestry. This sustainable solution, which makes it possible to reconcile trees and cocoa crops without further degrading the surrounding forests, also has the advantage of offering positive impacts for the cocoa supply chain itself.
- **Micro-climate.** By introducing forest and fruit trees into cocoa plots, agroforestry aims to create a microclimate beneficial to cocoa productivity. The trees planted in the plots increase humidity and limit the impact of drought on crops by providing shade for the cocoa trees, thus limiting evapotranspiration and cooling the ambient air. 
- **Controlling pests and diseases.** When properly modulated, the shade provided by agroforestry trees helps to regulate cocoa tree pests, such as brown pod rot caused by a fungus (favored by overly dense shade), and mirids, insects that cause cocoa tree dieback (which swarm when shade is absent or too light). According to CIRAD, farmers can reduce pesticide inputs and save up to 70% of the phytosanitary protection budget for an intensively managed plot.
- **Water availability.** Agroforestry shading also protects the soil from sunlight and keeps it cool and moist, improving rainwater infiltration and the ability of cocoa trees to draw water from the soil.
- **Soil health.** This approach improves the health of soils degraded by decades of monoculture. By promoting humidity in the litter within the cocoa plantation and adding organic matter to the soil, agroforestry shade trees can act as reservoirs for fungi. The presence of these trees can thus influence the quantity and diversity of mycorrhizae present in the soil and within the surface root system of cocoa trees. These mycorrhizae play a key role in the nutrition and health of cultivated cocoa trees, as well as their resistance to climatic hazards, because they enable better assimilation of phosphorus and nutrients by cocoa trees. 
- **Nitrogen fixation.** Among the trees planted in agroforestry, an atmospheric nitrogen-fixing species, Acacia mangium, is used to increase soil fertility. Its roots form a symbiotic relationship with soil bacteria (Rhizobium), which fix atmospheric nitrogen and transform it into a nitrogenous substance that can be assimilated by cocoa trees. This natural phenomenon reduces the need for chemical nitrogen fertilizers. 
- **Carbon storage.** The carbon captured by agroforestry trees and stored in their above-ground and below-ground biomass (leaves, trunk, roots, branches) is then returned to the soil through the fall of leaves and dead wood, enriching humus with organic matter. 
- **Biodiversity.** Agroforestry trees also help to restore biodiversity by providing shelter for a diverse range of fauna, which is essential to cocoa farming thanks to its various functions, such as pollination.

In the three years since the project was launched, some 450,000 trees have been planted in agroforestry on the fields of nearly 4,000 cocoa farmers. Among the species planted are slow-growing forest trees, such as Tiama and Niangon, and fast-growing forest trees, such as Fraké, Framiré, Gmelina, Ilomba, Cedrela, Mahogany and Acacia, which, thanks to their canopy, provide shelter for the underlying cocoa trees and wood from fallen branches. Fruit trees such as Kplé, Akpi and Petit Cola will produce fruit to feed farmers' families or sell on markets.

### Producers’ commitment: a key factor in the project's success
Awareness-raising among villagers, cocoa producers and local cocoa cooperative managers is a key component of the project. It has been carried out by our technical partner Agro-Map over the past three years, and has attracted the participation of over 9,000 people. Through awareness-raising workshops, animation groups and meetings with local authorities in the villages involved in the project, producers and their families have been trained in agroforestry techniques and the maintenance of planted trees, as well as in the importance of preserving the surrounding forest ecosystems, particularly in the face of frequent forest fires. These various actions have helped to make the project widely known in the Agnéby-Tiassa, Indénié Djuablin and Mé regions, and to ensure the involvement of local communities in the project. Going out into the field to meet men and women has also enabled Agro-Map to identify new sites for reforestation or agroforestry development, and so continue to develop the project and its many benefits.

### Ecosystem services for the benefit of local communities
In addition to its strong environmental impact and its contribution to transforming the cocoa industry, the project also generates valuable socio-economic benefits. During an audit conducted by Reforest'Action in September 2022, the local communities involved have already testified to the multiple benefits produced by the project on their living conditions.
The project as a whole has helped to generate employment, particularly among the younger generation, and to improve community incomes by involving villagers in tree nursery production, planting and maintenance activities. In particular, women's communities have become massively involved in the project, which has enabled them to strengthen their technical capacities and autonomy.  Agroforestry will also contribute to the food security of cocoa farmers and their families, as well as diversifying their income through the sale of seeds and fruit from agroforestry trees when they are mature enough to produce them. Fast-growing forest species, meanwhile, can provide communities with wood from their fallen branches.
All these benefits contribute to making the local cocoa industry more sustainable and redistributive, while helping to restore forests that have suffered for decades.

In Ivory Coast, reforestation is essential to support the cocoa industry

**In Senegal, Reforest'Action has been financing a regenerative, multidimensional project since February 2022. Led in the field by Karamba, a Franco-Senegalese economic interest group, and Bioeco, a French company providing technical support, the project aims to restore mangrove ecosystems around the village of Kataba, enrich degraded natural forests and develop agroforestry.**

## A multidimensional and regenerative project 
The project is located in the Ziguinchor region of southern Senegal, between Gambia and Guinea-Bissau, where biodiversity has been severely eroded as a result of the armed conflicts of the 1980s and the population explosion. Added to this environmental catastrophe is the salinization of the land, i.e. the accumulation of salts with a high sodium content in the soil to levels that are toxic for fauna, flora and fungi. The result is a massive abandonment of these lands, traditionally used for rice cultivation, which are gradually becoming infertile and evolving into bare, barren spaces, unsuitable for any agricultural activity. This natural phenomenon is exacerbated by climate change and the retreat of the region's forests, including the mangrove ecosystems along the Casamance River. 
The regenerative project financed by Reforest'Action and led by our partners Karamba and Bioeco, aims to restore natural ecosystems while generating an additional social and economic impact for local communities who live mainly from agriculture, fishing, livestock and forest resources. 
A total of 100,000 trees are to be planted under the project to achieve a triple objective: regenerating mangroves, restoring degraded forests and swamps, and developing agroforestry. At the end of the project's first year, in March 2023, an audit mission by Yori d'Aquino, Project Officer for Reforest'Action, noted the project's good operational progress, as well as the enthusiasm of local communities for both the regeneration of natural ecosystems of mangroves, forests and swamps, and the development of agroforestry.

## Regenerating mangroves: a source of environmental and socio-economic benefits
A veritable amphibious forest, the mangrove is a plant formation that covers 75% of the coasts, deltas and estuaries of intertropical regions. Mangroves are vital for biodiversity and local communities. Multifunctional by nature, it provides numerous ecosystem services, both environmental and socio-economic. The mangrove's root system also plays a vital role in preserving soil and water resources. Thanks to their roots, mangroves fix the unstable soils in which they grow, thereby limiting coastal erosion and sea-level rise. Rich in precious resources such as fish, medicinal plants, forests, fruit and honey, mangroves are also essential to local populations and their economic activities. 
Mangrove restoration, the main component of the project, aims to reduce the salinization of coastal land, particularly rice paddies, making them unsuitable for cultivation. The planting of mangrove trees (Rhizophora and Avicennia) also helps to increase mangrove-related economic activities such as fishing and the production of wood energy for cooking. Between February 2022 and February 2023, these labor-intensive operations mobilized a large number of local young people.

## Restoring soil health and biodiversity in natural forests and swamps
Four species are replanted to enrich degraded natural forests: néré, Senegal mahogany, linké and gmelina. Cashew seedlings are also introduced. These fire-resistant trees, with their high economic added value, will act as firebreaks against potential bush fires. 
The project also involves reforestation of maritime swamps located between the mangrove and the mainland. The reforestation actions carried out as part of the project concern swamps that were formerly herbaceous and have now been stripped bare by intensive cattle grazing, with the aim of stabilizing these ecosystems and restoring their crucial role in combating land salinization. The three species planted (eucalyptus, filao and niawli) will eventually regenerate the grass cover.

## Developing agroforestry to increase the availability of natural resources 
Around Kataba, local communities depend on agriculture for their daily livelihoods. They grow rice, millet, maize, cowpeas and sorghum. The agroforestry trees planted as part of the project will enable farmers to protect their crops and generate additional income by selling fruit at local markets. Our partners are training local producers in the need to include trees as integral components of their agriculture through the creation of agroforestry systems. Various tree species are introduced: 
- Fruit species, including detarium and néré (Parkia biglobosa), known for the juice extracted from its fruit as well as for its medicinal uses; these species will protect the underlying crops and provide local people with additional income from the sale of their fruit and seeds.
- Wood species such as gmelina, Senegal mahogany (Khaya senegalensis) and linké (Afzelia africana), a local species in danger of extinction. These species will provide communities with timber and firewood resources, thus avoiding the need to cut down existing forests. Linké has numerous applications in traditional pharmacopoeia, and will also provide fodder for livestock.

Local communities are directly involved in preparing the land for reforestation and planting. Each beneficiary is also responsible for the upkeep of the planted trees, which are a source of energy wood and fruit. At the same time, training programs in agroforestry ecosystem preservation techniques are offered to local farmers. In particular, they are trained in Assisted Natural Regeneration (ANR) techniques, such as identifying natural regrowth and protecting it with sheaths against livestock and bush fires.

In Kataba, Senegal, regenerating natural ecosystems involves local communities

**Since January 2020, Reforest'Action has been working in southern Ivory Coast alongside local company Agro-Map, which specializes in the development of sustainability projects in the agricultural, forestry and environmental fields. The objective is to contribute to the restoration and preservation of classified forests by reforesting degraded areas and developing agroforestry alongside small local cocoa producers. During the 2020-2021 season, 200,000 trees have been funded by Reforest'Action and are currently being planted in the field.**

### A community restoration project with a strong local impact

Led by our technical partner Agro-Map and local communities, the project aims to restore the many ecosystemic services provided by the forests and to develop the benefits of agroforestry associated with cocoa farming. Several components are being carried out in parallel:

*   The creation of agroforestry systems by planting fruit and forest trees in cocoa plots;
*   The restoration of the classified forests of Séguié and Rasso by planting local and varied forest species;
*   The sensitization and training of cocoa producers in agroforestry techniques and the sustainable protection of restored forests.
*   Monitoring and maintenance of the planted trees over the long term.

**Strengthened by community enthusiasm, the project, funded by Reforest'Action since January 2020, continues to develop around the localities of Agboville, Adzopé and Abengourou, in southern Ivory Coast.**

### Combining agroforestry with cocoa crops

By introducing a variety of tree species, particularly fruit trees, into cultivated plots, agroforestry aims to create a microclimate that increases crop productivity while improving the resilience of ecosystems. The approach thus makes it possible to rehabilitate biodiversity within agricultural land and to prevent soil erosion. It also contributes to the food security of local populations and to the generation of additional income from the sale of harvested fruits. **Aware that 80% of deforestation in Ivory Coast is linked to intensive agriculture, our partner Agro-Map sees agroforestry as a sustainable solution to reconcile trees and cocoa crops without degrading the surrounding forests.**

For the implementation of agroforestry systems, 35,629 forest and fruit trees were planted during the second quarter of 2021 by 1,523 cocoa farmers on an area of 1,187 hectares. Among the species, forest trees such as Fraké, Framiré, Tiama, Mahogany and Niangon will allow, thanks to their vegetation cover, to shelter the underlying cocoa trees from the sun or too much rain. Fruit trees such as Kplé, Akpi and Petit Cola will produce fruit for the villagers' consumption or for sale on the markets. Acacia trees are planted all around the plots to enclose the fields and protect them from livestock. Planting work will continue in the coming weeks.

### Restore nearby protected forests

In parallel with the agroforestry component of the project, a reforestation campaign is being conducted by Agro-Map and local communities in the classified forests of Séguié and Rasso. Managed sustainably by the Water and Forestry Department of Ivory Coast, these forests, which are now protected, still contain patches that have been severely degraded by past deforestation. In order to work towards their restoration, villagers are given degraded plots of land, which they can cultivate on the condition that they plant forest and fruit trees. In total, 100 villagers have been given 55 hectares of degraded forest plots, of which 46 hectares will be reforested by the end of summer 2021. Of various forest species (Framiré, Fraké, Mahogany, Niangon, Cedrela, Teak), the 51106 trees currently being planted will allow **the reconstitution of dense and perennial forest ecosystems and ensure the ecological continuity of the forests of Séguié and Rasso.**

### Train cocoa farmers to ensure their adherence

**Because a reforestation project cannot be conceived without the mobilization of the local communities**, our partner Agro-Map conducts, throughout the season, awareness and training activities for the cocoa producers and the managers of the cooperatives of the chocolate manufacturers who work with them. These workshops help to raise awareness of the project and ensure the involvement of the populations in it. They also aim to develop their technical skills in agroforestry and tree care, and to raise their awareness of the risks and solutions to bush fires in the dry season. In total, 4523 people were sensitized between January and June 2021. Reaching out to men and women in the field also allows Agro-Map to identify new sites to reforest or develop agro-forests, and thus continue to develop the project and its many benefits.

**Finally, key elements of the project's success, the monitoring of the trees and the maintenance of the planted plots** are carried out continuously by Agro-Map with the participation of the local communities. Emphasis is placed on the replacement of dying trees when necessary and on the installation of a firebreak system to protect the young forests from the frequent bushfires in the region.

2014_RIMBA RAYA BIODIVERSITY RESERVE_carbone_Indonésie

The Rimba Raya Biodiversity Reserve Project, an initiative by InfiniteEARTH, aims to reduce Indonesia’s emissions by preserving the project area of 47,237 hectares of tropical peat swamp forest for a total amount of 104 MtCO2 over 30 years.

 It is expected that regional biodiversity levels will be maintained and species populations will increase as important natural habitat is preserved. From a hydrology perspective, conservation of the peat forest will maintain the proper functionality of the local watershed. Nutrient flows from fallen biomass will serve as a critical food source for fish and other marine life. Tree cover will lower water temperature through shading making it a more conducive marine habitat. Vegetative cover will also mitigate erosion and flooding associated with land conversion by decreasing runoff and increasing soil absorption, thereby leading to improved water quality.

Between 1990 and 2005, Indonesia lost just over 2% of its forest cover each year, or about 1.9 million hectares per year. Today, this figure has risen to more than 2.5 million hectares per year, an area equivalent to the size of Belgium. The considerable loss of national forest cover is due to the clearing of forest areas by fire in order to open up land for agriculture, particularly for palm oil. The Rimba Raya reserve is rich in biodiversity, including the endangered Bornean orangutan. It was originally intended to be converted by the government into four oil palm plantations.

The Rimba Raya REDD+ project, located in Indonesia on the island of Borneo, aims to protect 64,977 hectares of tropical forests, swamps and peatlands and avoid the emission of 3,5 million t CO2e per year over a total period of 30 years. Through the project and the preservation of natural forest habitats, local biodiversity will be maintained and allowed to grow. From a hydrological point of view, the conservation of the peat bogs will help to maintain the proper functioning of the catchment area. The project also aims to protect the integrity of the adjacent world-renowned Tanjung Puting National Park by creating an extensive buffer zone along the park's 90 km eastern boundary.

2015_KEO SEIMA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY_carbone_Cambodge

The Seima Protection Forest (SPF)  is located in eastern Cambodia, mainly in Mondulkiri Province with a small area extending into Kratie Province. The REDD+ Project Area covers 166,983 ha of forest in the SPF Core Protection Area for a total amount of 14,266,485 tCO2 over 10 years. Local population directly depends of this forest as key source of income and play a main role in their spiritual beliefs. This forest is also a natural habitat for local fauna including Asian Elephants, primates, wild cattle, several carnivores and birds such as the Giant Ibis and Green Peafowl.

Since 2002, the Forest Administration (representative of the Royal Government of Cambodia) has collaborated with the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) and other local NGO partners to develop management systems for the SPF, both to conserve and restore the biodiversity values and to protect the livelihoods of local people.

The Keo Seima Wildlife Sanctuary covers nearly 300,000 hectares in eastern Cambodia and is rich in natural and cultural wildlife, forests, landscapes and indigenous communities. Its forest is home to 75 threatened species (classified as Critically Endangered, Endangered or Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List), over 350 bird species, 7 primate species and a population of Asian elephants. It is currently threatened by accelerated deforestation for agriculture and unsustainable resource extraction (including hunting, logging and fishing). These activities damage both biodiversity and the livelihoods of local people who depend on the forest.

The Keo Seima REDD+ project in Cambodia aims to protect 166,983 hectares of tropical forest within the Keo Seima Wildlife Sanctuary, restore the reserve's rich biodiversity and develop the livelihoods of indigenous communities. It is one of the most ambitious forest conservation programmes in Cambodia. The project, which is expected to avoid 14 million t CO2e per year, was validated by VCS as a REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) project in 2014. In 2015, 50,000 carbon credits were generated, corresponding to the amount of carbon stored. The project entered the scope of Reforest'Action in 2021 for the sale of carbon credits from 2015.

The Envira Amazonia project is a REDD+ project designed by VCS and CCBS in the state of Acre, Brazil, which aims to protect up to 39,300.60 hectares of tropical rainforest by engaging a large landowner willing to forgo conversion of forest land to a ranching operation.

In addition, the Envira Amazonia project will simultaneously conserve a rich biodiversity and a wide range of ecosystem services, providing direct benefits to local communities and mitigate the release of million metric tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions over the years of the project.

The three main Project Proponents are CarbonCo, LLC (“CarbonCo”), Freitas International
Group, LLC (“Freitas International Group or Carbon Securities”), and JR Agropecuária e
Empreendimentos EIRELI.

Around 60 km southeast of Feijó town in the Brazilian state of Acre, the Envira Amazonia project runs along either side of the Jurupari river in the Amazon Basin. It takes roots on 200,000 hectares of land formerly owned by businessmen and sold in 2009 to forest management experts. The Envira Amazonia Property was historically used for rubber tapping and was an extractive area for natural forest products before these activities stopped due to the crash in rubber prices in the late 1980s. The paving of the main east-west highway in Acre in 2011 has greatly increased property values, and cattle ranching along this road corridor has thus expanded.

The Envira Amazonia REDD+ project is located in the state of Acre, Brazil, and aims to protect up to 200,000 hectares of tropical rainforest. By engaging landowners willing to forgo conversion of forest land to pastures, this project is expected to generate 1,2 million teq CO2 of annual emission reduction. The Envira Amazonia project also establishes alternative, sustainable economic opportunities for local communities that promote environmental stewardship and protect biodiversity. Moreover, rainforest conservation itself protects forest ecosystem services such as air and water filtration, water and nutrient cycle regulation, flood protection, and the spiritual and cultural value of tropical forests. Combined, these activities help discourage deforestation in the wider region.

Reforest’Action is joining forces with C4 EcoSolutions and AfriCarbon, two South African companies into the protected reserves of Kuzuko and Koedoeskloof. The goal is to restore these ecosystems by planting more than 500,000 seeds of Spekboom, a local species which is essential to the ecological functioning of the region. The project will develop a new sustainable grazing management system to improve the carrying capacity of livestock without degrading the environment. Numerous benefits will also be generated: the return of biodiversity, including a population of elephants, rainwater infiltration improvement, restoration of arable land and improve the living conditions of the local populations.

DECENT_WORK_AND_ECONOMIC_GROWTH

Within the Eastern Cape, in South Africa, land desertification is due to the increasing pressure of livestock on pastureland. Nowadays, the increasing scarcity of vegetation cover and the degradation of local farmers’ land and surrounding reserves are causing many negative environmental effects, such as the drying up of water resources, loss of biodiversity and soil erosion. The plantation areas are made up of former degraded pastures, and are located close to areas that have been protected for several decades.

The project is led in the field by Anthony Mills, a geochemist and expert in environmental development projects. He is the founder of two companies, AfriCarbon in 2009 and C4 EcoSolutions in 2015, which ensure the technical and operational deployment of the project.

Créé par le ministère de la Transition écologique et de la Cohésion des territoires en collaboration avec de nombreux partenaires, le Label Bas-Carbone, qui s’applique notamment à des projets forestiers, contribue à la réduction de l’empreinte carbone nationale de la France. Afin de créer un peuplement pérenne et résilient, des essences variées ont été sélectionnées pour la plantation. Le massif en devenir constituera un corridor écologique, lieu de passage privilégié pour la faune. Ce projet permettra le stockage de plus de 3 400 tonnes équivalent CO2 sur les trente prochaines années, contribuant ainsi à l’atténuation du changement climatique.

In Saint-Aubin-Routot Rogerville, Normandy, a 13-hectare agricultural wasteland on the edge of the Bois de la Côte Rogerville is the subject of a Low-Carbon label afforestation project. Created by the French Ministry of Ecological Transition and Territorial Cohesion in collaboration with numerous partners, the Low-Carbon label, which also applies to forestry projects, contributes to reducing France's national carbon footprint. In order to create a sustainable and resilient stand, a variety of tree species has been selected for planting. The future forest will form an ecological corridor, a privileged passageway for wildlife. The project will store over 3,400 tonnes of CO2 equivalent over the next thirty years, thereby helping to mitigate climate change.

Reforest’Action is joining forces with the Ivorian company Agro-Map to support cocoa producers in the forest of Séguié in the Agnéby-Tiassa region, Ivory Coast, in the restoration of the forest and in the creation of agroforestry systems, which will make it possible to reconcile trees and crops in order to maintain a microclimate favourable to the development of agriculture. Over 200,000 are planted on 450 hectares.

The main objectives of the project are the development of agroforestry, the restoration of a classified forest, the preservation of biodiversity and the economic development of the populations. By restoring their environment: the local communities of Agnéby-Tiassa will also improve their food security.

QUALITY_EDUCATION

Deforestation in Ivory Coast, if not halted, could lead to the total disappearance of the country's natural forest cover within the next twenty years. The 234 classified forests in the country, including the Séguié forest in the Agnéby-Tiassa region, where our project takes place, have lost more than 70% of their forest cover in half a century. This is due to extensive agriculture and cocoa production, which have gained ground on the primary Ivorian forests, and the unsustainable exploitation of these forests to meet the growing need for firewood. This loss of animal and plant biodiversity is now causing climatic changes throughout the region, in particular a reduction in rainfall and the appearance of increasingly long periods of drought, which often have a fatal effect on the crops of local communities. 

Agro-Map is an Ivorian company specialising in the development of sustainability projects in the agricultural, forestry and environmental fields. Its objective is to reconcile agriculture and forestry in order to maintain a microclimate favourable to the development of agriculture. The Agro-Map team is in constant contact with farmers and builds strong partnerships with local communities.

Reforest'Action is partnering with the Ivorian company Agro-Map to support cocoa farmers in the Séguié forest in restoring the forest and creating agroforestry systems, which will allow them to reconcile the trees with their crops. By restoring their environment, the local communities of Agnéby-Tiassa will also improve their food security and income.

Reforest'Action is partnering with Planalto to restore "El Tintal", by planting 160 000 trees over 2 years and to establish a conservation area on former degraded agricultural lands. This approach will help replant native species of the region in order to reconstitute resilient ecosystems that will act as carbon sinks, but also to restore the multifunctionality of the spaces concerned.

SUSTAINABLE_CITIES_AND_COMMUNITIES

The project developed by our partner is part of the Laguna de Términos protected area, in the Mexican state of Campeche. The lagoon has been recognized as an area of high importance since 1994 by the Mexican government because of the richness of the biological ecosystems found in its estuaries. They are home to more than 130 species of mammals including the jaguar, today classified as “near threatened”. Between land and sea, the Tintal defines the ecosystem in which the Palo de Tinto, or logwood, grows within the lagoon. Emblematic of the Yucatán Peninsula, the Tintal has been severely degraded by human activities after the independence of Mexico: currently, nearly 80% of the Campeche state's land has been converted into grazing areas for cattle ranching or into crops for palm oil export. The project aims to restore this unique ecosystem.

Planalto is a rural production company located in the state of Campeche, one of the administrative divisions that make up the Yucatán Peninsula. As a productive and responsible business model, it works to implement forestry and permaculture practices in rural areas, emphasizing the use of native species and natural treatment products. Doing so, it helps promote a multifunctional reforestation model that benefits both the environment and the local communities, mainly composed of producers. During the project, Planalto will supervise the implementation of the selected seedlings in nurseries, the preparation of the soil, the planting sessions as well as the maintenance and monitoring of the planted trees.

Reforest'Action is partnering with the company Planalto to restore "El Tintal" ecosystem and to establish a conservation area for biodiversity. This multi-faceted project is located near the town of Palizada, southwest of the Mexican state of Campeche and concerns two areas located side by side. 

On the one hand, the project implementer Juan-Carlos is working to regenerate the Tintal by planting Palo de Tinto on the degraded pastures of his ranch. Palo de Tinto, also known as "logwood", is a small thorny tree from Mexico whose dark red fibers produce a black ink used for dyeing clothes and hair. Through the transformation of wood chip residues, the project aims to create its own circular bioeconomy system. 

On the other hand, Juan-Carlos has established a conservation area in the untouched jungle, with a dedicated area of 350 hectares that will serve as a refuge for native animal species such as the jaguar.
