The fynbos biome: a vegetation treasure trove with unique flora

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Cape Floral Kingdom, also known as the fynbos biome, stretches across the width of South Africa. It is a reserve for biodiversity and is home to invaluable flora including a myriad of endemic species. It is, however, threatened by the presence of invasive plants.

Restoring forests with spekboom in the Eastern Cape, South Africa

In the Eastern Cape of South Africa, intensive farming has severely impacted the surrounding ecosystems and biodiversity. Over the last decades, approximately 80% of the 1.5 million ha of spekboom thicket has been degraded. To address spekboom thicket degradation, restoration programmes are being implemented more frequently within the province.

A tree species with multiple benefits for the restoration of South African ecosystems

In the Eastern Cape, South Africa, land desertification is caused by the increasing pressure of livestock on grazing land. Today, the depletion of vegetation cover and the degradation of the land of local farmers and surrounding reserves are causing many adverse environmental effects, such as the depletion of water resources, biodiversity erosion and soil erosion. In this context, Reforest'Action is partnering with C4 EcoSolutions and AfriCarbon, two South African companies, to restore these ecosystems by planting 500,000 trees of a local species essential to the ecological functioning of the region.

South Africa: reforesting the banks of the Breede and Berg rivers

This is one of the new forestry projects financed by Reforest'Action in 2021: led in the field by Breedekloolf Wine and Tourism, the reforestation of the banks of the Breede and Berg rivers, in the south-west of the country, will allow the restoration of an endangered ecosystem by fighting the invasion of exotic vegetation and planting 40 different endemic species. Discover the stakes of the project and a new video shot by our local partner.
